It’s Personal

“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.”

John 11:25

Such a powerful, profound and revelatory statement. One would expect that it would have been shared on the steps of the Temple, before a large crowd, or imparted to His disciples. Yet Jesus chose to make this “I am” statement directly to Martha. It is in a personal exchange as she has run towards Him in her pain and disappointment that her brother Lazarus has died.

The revelation of Jesus being the Resurrection and the Life to only Martha was intentional and personal. Her spirit needed to catch the fullness of this statement. She stood there in faith that had Jesus been there Lazarus would not have died and been healed. But Jesus extended to an invitation to the miraculous beyond even the miracle of healing. Jesus spoke Resurrection. He spoke life.

Even then, she reaffirms her faith that in the future, on the last day, there is resurrection. But Jesus wanted her to know that there is resurrection in her present day, in her present circumstances.

In this there is a message for us, a personal one for each of us to receive. That for each one of us, in our present need and circumstances Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life.

He is the Resurrection and the life now. He makes all things new now. Gives us hope today. Life today.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

2 Corinthians 5:17
