The Yellow House

Joy does not arrive with a fanfare
on a red carpet strewn
with the flowers of a perfect life

joy sneaks in
as you pour a cup of coffee
watching the sun
hit your favourite tree
just right

(Donna Ashworth)

Joy is found amongst the mundane. It sparkles in the ordinary. It is the yellow house that has your youngest excitedly calling out yellow and signing house as you drive to speech therapy.

It’s random dance parties to the James Bond theme song, a scented candle hitting the notes of Christmas. The angel decoration from your childhood that now adorns your tree. It’s the first flowers from hydrangea cuttings nurtured through winter. Fresh sheets on the bed. Hugs at the school pick up. Snorting with laughter at random Instagram reels with the boys.

God made us for joy. God is joy, & the joy of living reflects the original joy that God felt in creating us.
