Have courage for the great sorrows of life and patience for the small ones; and when you have laboriously accomplished your daily task, go to sleep in peace. God is awake.
Victor Hugo
Life! Brings us to our knees or keeps us on the go. So many things to attend to, to focus on. We’re busy, with long to do lists and demands on our time. And often we find when our heads hit our pillows that our mind is anything but still and calm ready for sleep.
In the Gospel of Luke we read of two sisters, Mary and Martha. They hosted Jesus at their home, and while Martha busied herself with preparations, Mary made the most of being with Jesus.
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:38-42
What struck me afresh with this story, was what Jesus said to Martha – “you’re worried, anxious, troubled.” It wasn’t so much that she was working, it was more that this was her main focus. Worry puts fear at the centre not Jesus.
We need to go about our work like Martha did but with the posture of Mary. Our hearts set toward Jesus.
And then whether it is the great sorrows or the little worries of life or everything in between, we can lay them at Jesus’ feet.
And in this we find rest.
In Him we find rest.
When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.
Psalm 94:19
