The name of Jesus

As parents, there are countless moments with our children that we cherish. As a parent of a child with special needs these moments often hold even deeper poignancy.

Oscar has challenges with speech and communication, making it difficult for him to express himself in ways we take for granted. His spoken words are limited. So every new word he learns is a victory and cause for celebration. Whether it be “bye” or “oops” or even “batman” we delight in each new addition to his repertoire.

The other night Oscar spoke a new word. But not just any word or name. He said the name of Jesus. This was more than just a word— it spoke of a connection. It was more than the articulation of a word, it was Oscar showing us he knows who Jesus is and that he is a part of the family.

Jesus is now in family drawings. He is up in the sky as directed by Oscar. And at night Oscar says love you Jesus.

Hearing Oscar say Jesus has been a powerful reminder that our faith can transcend challenging barriers. It is testament to the fact that Jesus can break through every obstacle that we may face. Oscar’s ability to say “Jesus” is precious not just because it’s another word he’s learned to say, but because it speaks of a relationship with Jesus who sustains and loves him.

It is a reminder of the eternal for which we all live.

It is a moment of grace, a small miracle to hear that oh so precious name being spoken by oh so precious Oscar.

PS. Oscar was so excited to see Jesus in a Minecraft cartoon of the Gospel.
