Advent – Missing Out

It’s hard not to feel sometimes that you’re on the margins. Having a child with sensory needs can mean that the “party,” so to speak, requires careful navigation if you’re to attempt attending. Santa parades and large gatherings are often avoided. A visit to Santa is orchestrated for the very first opening, before the crowds arrive. And then it’s the sensory load after to attend to. It’s easy to feel sidelined and that you’re missing out at this time of year.

But God finds us on the margins. Just as the angels first visited shepherds – ordinary, overlooked workers. The gospel does not begin with power or prestige. It begins on the margins, with people who were not expecting to be noticed, let alone chosen.

It tells us something essential about God’s heart: God comes to us where we are – in the dark, in the ordinary, in the places we assume He is least likely to show up. In the middle of the chaos, the stress and the mess. When we’re not ready in our Sunday best, He still comes.

No one misses out when it comes to God. Wherever we find ourselves, whatever the state of our heart. He is there with us.

Emmanuel.

God with us.
