Process

Winter sunlight streamed through old wooden windows onto the kitchen island around which we gathered. Farmhouse vibes in this church hall kitchen. Aprons on, to learn the art of breadmaking.

Warm water, the right yeast. Mix.

Let it rest.

Add salt and flour. And then the mixing and the kneading begins. Seeing our raw ingredients blend to a sticky mess. Knead the dough. Keep kneading. The sticky mess combining to a smooth dough.

Let it rest.

Let it rise.

Then knead and knead. Add butter. The dough gets stickier. In fact, it feels like we’re going backwards, undoing all that has been done. Ruining our dough. Side glances, have we made a mistake. We’re urged to keep kneading. And before our eyes, it pulls together. Soft and smooth again. Ready to be made into small balls.

Let it rest.

Let it rise.

Come back and bake.

Come back and see beautiful soft and fresh rolls.

Trust the process. Trust the time. Trust the undoing that becomes the making.

Trust.

Those who know your name trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.

Psalm 9:10
