Matariki has a beautiful way of slowing us down. It invites us to look back before we look forward – to honour those who shaped us and to give thanks for the gift of yesterday.
This week I walked through my nana’s old house. The last time I’d been there, I was eight years old. The rooms stood empty, yet promoted me to remember. Memories of roast chicken shared around the table in the conservatory. Tiny vintage glasses of lemonade that made us feel so grown up. Fresh farmers’ cream. Walks to the river, where Nana would tell stories of a prince and princess transformed into trees.

Jesus often invited people to remember – not because He wanted them to live in yesterday, but because remembering reveals God’s faithfulness.
Perhaps that’s the gift of Matariki. We honour the past, not to hold onto it, but to give thanks for it. And then, with hearts full of gratitude, we lift our eyes to the One who has been faithful in every season and trust Him with the next.
The stars of Matariki remind us to remember, to celebrate the present and to look to the future.
All seasons couched by the grace of God.
