Purple Lights

“Take notice of what light does to everything.”

Tess Guinery

Early one evening after work, I took Oscar for a drive. Nothing special. Just our usual thing, music playing (loudly, his playlist of course), driving around with nowhere particular to be.

Then we spotted the trees.

Purple fairy lights wrapped around them outside a supermarket. So we detoured into the carpark for a closer look. And somehow, that ordinary carpark became magical.

The lights changed everything. The trees, the darkness. Oscar beside me exclaiming in joy!

It made me think about how light doesn’t necessarily change where we are – but it changes what we notice.

And that’s exactly what God does. He meets us in the ordinary and helps us see it differently.

A drive. A supermarket carpark. Purple lights.

Nothing extraordinary. And yet, in that moment, magical.

Perhaps the invitation is for us to simply notice. To look for the light and what it does to everything.

To look for the light, to look for God.

God is light; in him there is no darkness at all
